We are studying the extent to which infant-directed communication presents unique as well as similar features across distant cultures. For example, we have just completed a study in which we have worked on infant-directed singing and speaking in three hunter-gatherer societies (Franco, Falk & Lewis – funded by SEMPRE and Leverhulme; fieldwork Daniel Kricheff, Ingrid and Jerome Lewis, and Alice Rudge).
